A 26-year-old man from Gavhalwada-Velgue was found dead in a well at Pali-Sawantwada in the Thane village panchayat area of Sattari on Sunday morning, triggering concern among local residents.

The deceased was identified as Dipesh Laxman Ustekar. Residents spotted the body floating in the well and alerted the Valpoi Fire and Emergency Services. A rescue team rushed to the spot and retrieved the body using ropes and other rescue equipment.

The operation was carried out under the supervision of senior firefighter Dattaram Dessai and involved firefighters Arvind Dessai, Prasad Posnaik, Sainath Sawant, Satyavan Gawas, Rama Naik, Krishna Naik and off-duty firefighter Sandeep Gavankar.

Locals said Ustekar was the son-in-law of a family residing at Pali-Sawantwada and had arrived at his in-laws’ house two days earlier. The discovery of his body left relatives and villagers in shock.

Preliminary information suggests that Ustekar may have died by suicide after allegedly jumping into the well. However, police said the exact circumstances leading to the death remain unclear and that all possible angles are being investigated.

Some residents have raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the incident, but police have urged people not to draw conclusions until the investigation is completed.

Valpoi Police conducted a panchanama at the scene and took custody of the body. It was later sent to Goa Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination. The report is expected to help ascertain the exact cause of death.

The incident has cast a shadow of grief over Pali, Thane, Velgue and nearby areas, with residents awaiting the findings of the police investigation and post-mortem report.
