A 23-year-old maid from Nepal has been arrested by Saligao Police on charges of stealing cash and gold jewellery worth over Rs 5 lakh from a residence at Pilerne.
Saligao Police Inspector Dinesh Gadekar mentioned that the house owner Deepa Lingudkar from Pilerne filed a complaint stating that the accused, Bimala Poon, was working as a maid in her house to carry out household chores.
The theft came to light on June 14 when the complainant discovered that gold ornaments, including a necklace, bangles and other jewellery, along with cash of Rs 25,000 were missing from a cupboard in the flat. The total value of the stolen property is estimated to be over Rs 5 lakhs.
The complainant informed the police that no one other than the domestic helper had access to the house during the period in question. There were also no signs of a housebreaking incident during the night.
Saligao Police registered the offence against the maid under Section 306 of BNS and arrested the accused on Tuesday. She will be produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class on Wednesday for police remand. Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Dishan Naik under the supervision of PI Dinesh Gadekar.
